Week 2 - So it begins…

Sooo I’m really quite pleased with my skin at the moment. I’ve been on 20mg a day for the first 2 weeks, and then I’ve been on 60mg today and yesterday. I’ve still got my fingers tightly crossed - although I have broken out in spots over the past week, I’m not sure if it was ‘THE’ initial breakout or not!

The breakout I’ve had consisted of small spots that lasted for about 2 days which was unusual, as it would normally take much longer for them to die down. At the moment I just have red marks left where the spots have been and just one spot. One spot! So I am fairly happy at that, as I envisaged the initial breakout to be 10x worse, which is why I’m not sure if it was ‘the one’ or not. I’m hoping and praying I don’t get a terrible breakout in the next few weeks now that my dose has been increased, and this is what I’m worried about!

So everythings okay on the spot scene. In terms of dryness - My skin HAS gotten dry now, but it’s no way near as bad as I expected it to be. I realise that this is because I’ve been on such a low dosage so I’m just going to see what happens over the next week or two. My face feels tighter than it would normally, and I can feel dryness on my chin and nose but you can’t actually see it. The only time that the dryness is visible is when I’m wearing makeup and there seems to be a circle of dryness around spots that have died.

My lips are happy as larry - not chapped, sore, or cracked in any way. If I had to say anything they just feel slightly dryer than normal but nothing to worry about. One thing I am worried about is the fact that going on 20mg for the first 2 weeks has potentially lulled me into a false sense of security, and that my skins going to go nuts any day soon! I’m scared! I mean, my derm explained that she was putting me on 20mg for a the first 2 weeks because your skin is supposed to get worse, so does this mean I will somehow have scraped through without an absoulutely awful initial outbreak? who knows!? only time will tell.

Ermm another side effect I’ve had this week has been lower back pain. I was at a festival at the weekend (CREAMFIELDS!!!) and I’m not sure if it was a mixture of standing up all day long and Roac, but my back was killing me! I just wanted to sit down all the time and it spoiled it a little bit for me. I’ve been to Leeds fest twice before and never had back pain like that.

I drank at the festival too (just beer, cider and the odd alcopop) and it didn’t seem to affect me in any way - didn’t have a hangover or anything either. In 2 weeks time I’m going back to uni for freshers week, by which time the 60mg will be fully in my system so we shall see if it has any effect then! At least I will have gotten through 2 weeks of drinking without any awful roac hangovers!! woop.

Until next week my fellow roac-ers! x

P.S My derm prescribed me this stuff when I got my roac called Doublebase which is a mousturiser, and it’s bloody marvellous! It forms a layer over your skin to keep the natural oils in, and keeps your skin silky and smooth without feeling at all greasy! All this on the NHS too! I’ve been using E45 the past 2 weeks and didn’t even bother to open the box the doc gave me, but now I’m a total convert. Ask your derm and say Ali sent you..

Anyhoo, just as you say, my Mum and brothers both suffer as much as I do.

whoops, submitted too early!

I saw a Derm a couple of years ago and was given Roac, but as I was suffering from depression, did not take it, but I have reached the point where I am so fed up with my skin, I am asking my doc if I can see him again.

My skin rules my life, it is my first and last thoughts every day, and there are times I do not want to go to work or pick my son up from school as it is sooo bad.

Reading all these blogs has made me feel better and am really keen to do it this time!!!!

I agree, I too was amazed at the amount of people going through the same thing as me when I found this site! It really is brilliant and it gets you through the day knowing there are other people going through the same things as you are.

Good look with your course! :) x
