Laura’s Roaccutane Diary, Week 2 - arggh!!

Well, it’s the end of week 2 for me and in the past 3 days things have gone dramatically downhill. I had a massive breakout, the worst I’ve had in years, mainly on my chin and around my mouth, which is my problem area. I’ve got lots of painful red lumps and whiteheads. I’m no stranger to painful spots that last a long time but I have so many at once at the moment that have popped up in such a short space of time that it really hurts. Smiling is out of the question – and not just because I don’t feel like it! I know it’s supposed to get worse before it gets better but I hope it doesn’t keep getting worse for a long time. I can’t believe how many spots have surfaced in 3 days. 3 days earlier, my skin wasn’t great but I was able to make it look passable with make up, so much so I was confident enough to go on a date. My date would get a shock if he saw me now. I now have to put off seeing him again until my skin has cleared up a bit. The problem is I have no idea how long this will be. What if it stays like this (or gets worse, which doesn’t bear thinking about!) for weeks to come…

Apart from the breakout, other side effects I’ve had are dry, peeling skin (on face only), dry lips (but manageable so far), hot, itchy eyes (but nothing too serious), hot flushes, headaches and nausea. The last three seem to have subsided over the past few days, in fact since the breakout. I also tried drinking alcohol a couple of times in the first week. My dermatologist said I could do this in moderation, but it appears I can’t! After one drink I felt drunk, had hot flushes and woke up with a massive headache the next day to boot. At first, I was distraught at the thought of not being able to drink, but after seeing the effects, I have decided to try to abstain totally for the whole course. I’m going to be on a long course so the thought of it is tough, but I think it will be good for me. It will force me not to rely on alcohol to give me more confidence, deal with stress etc. That’s not to say that I won’t be very happy to have a celebratory drink at the end of my treatment (hopefully with lovely clear skin at last!)

I’ve got my 2nd appointment with my dermatologist in 2 weeks. She will no doubt up my dose (I’m only on 10mg). I’m wondering if I should encourage her to up it to 30mg rather than just 20mg. I’m not sure if there is any benefit or not in increasing very gradually. I’m eager to speed things along a bit! But not if it means the side effects are a lot worse.

At the moment, I’m contemplating what I can put on my spots to reduce the redness and soothe the pain. I’m using tea tree oil at the moment but wondered if anyone knows of a good product? Also not a big fan of the moisturizer my dermatologist prescribed me – Ceracuta (Noviderm). I live in France so maybe it’s not a brand people are familiar with in the UK. I’ve had to put a lot on and I’m hoping that has encouraged the spots. Any recommendations for a good moisturizer that really works on dry skin but doesn’t encourage spots?

Grateful for any advice!

Hi Laura,
I can totally sympathize with you, i’m currently into week 4, week 1 was ok just getting used to the side affects then come week 2 it was terrible I had a huge outbreak and didn’t leave the house I looked that bad. I couldn’t even put make-up on because my face was so dry. Now……well getting better I can see an improvement, but I have a couple of spots that look like they have set up camp on my face!!!! One on my jaw line near my ear, it’s been there ages and really hurts, then one on my chin that just doesn’t want to budge. The side of my face on my left side is taking a while to clear up to but that’s where my spots are at their worst most of the time so am putting it down to that, anyone else had the same problem??? Are we allowed to use tea tree on troublsome spots?? I have tried to stick to the simple products as I thought using any spot treatment ones were a big no no, but then I might be wrong. I’m not giving up though, i’ve started so I AM going to finish!!!!!!!

Glad to hear I’m not the only one experiencing hot flushes, especially at night. I’m on day 8 now and my chin has really dried out, have just been using Simple moisturiser on it and it does work.

Meant to say - if your date doesn’t like you warts* and all then he’s not worth bothering about! Think about the end results.

* Delete warts & add spots.

Thanks for your comments Liv, Lor and Shareen.

Liv - good to hear you’re in week 4 and things have calmed down from the dreaded week 2. I am planning to call in sick tomorrow and be a hermit in the flat over the weekend. Bit of a funny question, but how long did you stay a hermit?! I don’t know what do about work next week. Might suggest I work from home, but it’s not really appropriate and everyone would be asking me why. My derm said I can use products on my spots, but then she also said I could drink and that turned out to be a big no no! I am using tcp at the moment to try and soothe the pain and reduce the inflammation. Of course this absolutely reeks but I live alone and am not leaving the flat at the moment so it’s ok.

Lor - I found the hot flushes subsided in the second week. Let me know how you get on with them. Don’t think I can get the Simple range in France but can ask my Mum and Dad to bring some when they come out at the end of May. Oh and thanks for confirming that you weren’t suggesting I had warts as well ;)

Shareen - thanks, your post really gave me hope. You really hit the nail on the head when you said it’s not just what it looks like but the fact that it hurts so much. Talking, eating and smiling/laughing are especially painful and it makes communicating with people at work a nightmare. I won’t be able to stay off work for 3 weeks though - did it stay in the same state for 3 weeks? What dosage are you on?

This site is great. Without it I would have no-one to “talk” to able to actually understand what I’m going through -all of my friends are clear skinned - grrrr!

hey laura, no it did get better over the 3 weeks bt was still bad and painful through out, and i totally understand about the ‘not being able to smile’ LOL..after them bad 3 weeks my skin did get alot better not so much like all the spots were goin, i was still getin plenty new ones but they werent as painful and skin became normal again nt ridiculously dry and i was able to smile and move my face again..waheyy lol..on first month i was on: 30 mg on my 2nd month i was on: 40 mg..on my 3rd month i was on 60mg..and now on my first week on my 4th month and still on 60 mg as i weigh 64kg i cant go higher than that!! i am meant 2 b finished my course in 3 weeks but skin still isnt completely clear of spots…i am gettin alot less spots and the feelin of think ONE spot stands out is quite good haha..bt im nt sure if i shud b geten spots at all at this stage so im goin 2 see how it goes 4 the next 3 weeks hopefully by then ill be completely clear so i can stop the roacc..because reallly dnt wnt 2 b on it 4 summer but if an extra month is needed then ill def do it..one month more wont hurt 4 perfect results…how are you doing and hows the side effects? oh by the way my friends have perfect skin to i mean nt jus ‘normal’ skin but perfect where they hardly even get the odd spot..so annoyin! Hi Shareen,
Thanks. No changes to report really. Glands under my jaw all swollen - often happens when I have a bad breakout. Also got a couple of mouth ulcers - I find I get these with breakouts too. I have arranged to work from home next week so that gives me one more week before I have to see anyone! Hopefully after that week, the pain will have subsided and I will be able to attempt to put makeup on. I’m hoping mine will follow a similar pattern to yours. I’m not expecting to stop getting spots after this massive breakout is over, but if they are fewer, less angry and less painful, I’ll be able to deal with them.

Apart from the breakout itself and associated pain, don’t have many other side effects at the moment. Guess it’s because I’m only on 10mg and my body has adjusted. I had more side effects in the 1st week. I’ve got dry lips but manageable. I’ve always had dry lips anyway and have to apply lip balm constantly even when I’m not on Roacc. Got dry skin around my mouth and nose and rough, dry skin on my cheeks under my eyes but that’s about it.

Obviously depends what your derm says, but if any doubt, I’d go for the extra month. Better to get rid of it once and for all, an extra month is nothing. I’m looking at a 7mth course. This is what I calculated is the minimum I’d need if my derm increases my dose gradually each month. Lots of people seem to be on 4 month courses so I feel like mine is long, but if it means I limit the side effects, I guess it’s good. Anyway, we’ll see what my derm says when I see her in 2 weeks.

Good luck for your last or second to last month!

Hello,

I got a really bad breakout at the end of week 2 and it is only now decided to clear up! I unfortunately didn’t have the option of hermit-ing it, so I had to brazen it out. It is now getting better though ( I am starting week 5) and I am hoping that it will continue to imporove. Someone on here said (and I can’t remember who) that you should think that you are getting now all the spots that you would have had if you weren’t on roacc - potential spots can lie under your skin for months and the roacc is just pushing out all the gunk from your pores. This really helped me - hope it helps you too!!
