I was watching “the diet doctors: inside & out” on channel 5 and they had some skin advice that I noted down and thought i’d post. Diet obviously isn’t the cause of acne, however, I do reckon attempting to eat healthy does have its benefits.

Firstly they mentioned that certain foods can trigger skin problems (acne, eczema, rosacea), these included:

  1. Cows milk
  2. Citrus fruit
  3. Tomatoes

They then did a 2 week experiment with a pair of twins. They put one of the twins on a high fat/high sugar diet and the other twin on a high fibre, low fat/low sugar diet. Even after a couple of days you could see a difference. The high fat/high sugar twin’s skin has got a greasy shine to it and she had broken out into a few spots across her cheek whilst the other twins skin had stayed the same.

Foods that benefit the skin are:

  1. Eggs
  2. Chicken
  3. Oily fish
  4. Kiwi fruit
  5. Passion fruit
  6. Blueberries

Supplements that are helpful are:

  1. Zinc
  2. Omega 3
  3. Aloe vera
  4. Vitamin B

Oh, and they said to drink more water (obviously..).

I agree that these things make sense in holistic body approach and not just in the state of your skin but to be honest I think stuff like that only makes a huge difference if you have ‘normal’ acne.

All of us are on Roaccutane as the oil production in our bodies is incorrect and this is reprogramming (dermatoligist’s word, not mine!!) it so although a good diet is good over all, no amount of fresh veg would ever get rid of my ginourmous lumps!!!!

Yeah, fruit and veg wasn’t going to shift mine either.

I wasn’t suggesting that a bad diet was the cause of acne, just that eating healthily is an extra helping hand on the way to clear skin.

Hey guys,

I agree diet doesn’t cause severe acne.

…if I eat healthily my skin feels and looks better. Plus, I need every bit of strength to get out of bed in the morning. On the other hand if I eat junk food regularly I look so tired and feel drained.

Yeah a good diet definitely helps the quality of your skin, it’s just a shame that our skin is covered in lumps!

I did find that when I take zinc supplements,my skin is slightly better (apparently lack of zinc is linked to your skin overproducing oil & also zinc helps ur skin heal & absorb vitamin C better).

But yeah, I’ve always had a good diet with lots of water, fruit & veg, & yet there’s people out there who can smoke, drink alot, eat junk food & not sleep much, who have great clear skin! (I’ve been secretly screaming inside at the unfairness of this, since I was about 13!!!).

I don’t drink but do smoke and was wondering is it my lack of excersise that is increasing the problem.. Hey Angela,

Unfortunetly there is no real quick fix :-( I do think stopping smoking would be a good start though as chemicals absorbed from tobacco smoke can damage the tissue under the skin.

Try including things in your diet that are known to be beneficial to skin like eggs, blueberries, grapes, chicken etc. My mum who gets a few spots around her chin always says that when she goes on a diet and is eating lots of fruit and veg her skin is much better.

Also maybe look at the products you are using, as there is a possibility they may be irritating your face.

If none of these things seem to be working I would visit your doctor and see what they suggest. Possibly look into the pill “Dianette”, it really helped my sister.

Hi Abi,
Thanks for the advice will increase the intake of the items you have listed I have also bought hair, skin and nails vitamins and omega 3 vitamins. I am hopeing that this is just a phase and the problem will sort its self out. i On my skin I have been using Nivea cream and every morning I have a new spot.
Thanks.

Hey Angela,

The nivea cream may possibly be a bit too heavy. You might want to try a lighter moisturiser or an oil-free one and see if that helps :-)

Also if after your diet modifications you still can’t see any improvement I would go to your doctors and see what they suggest.

Good luck with it :-)
