Recently we have received a few emails asking: should I go on Accutane/Roaccutane for my acne?

Before deciding on whether to go on Accutane you need to be aware of the side effects. Accutane can have severe side effects in pregnant women, including birth defects and fetal death. It should also be noted that taking Accutane might cause depression.

Recently the U.S department of Health and Human Services released a new webpage warning of the dangers, buying Accutane online.

Ask your dermatologist about Accutane, he or she will have the final say in whether you will be prescribed Accutane. Most doctors will only prescribe Accutane for severe forms of acne (cystic acne) or if other treatments have failed. Many people see Accutane as a last resort after trying topical treatments such as benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics.

If you decide to go on Accutane you need to be prepared for a minimum of three months treatment. This may seem a long time, but it could be small price to pay for clear skin.

In this blog post we haven’t mention the huge positives of Accutane – many people take Accutane once and never have to worry about acne again.

Today Jenny commented in our Accutane/Roaccutane possible side effects blog post describing the success she has had with Roaccutane – she has finished her treatment and Accutane is still working.

Weigh up the pros and cons, do you own research and make an informed decision.

I never realized that Accutaine would be good for cystic acne. My husband has that and from time to time he will get these big cysts on his face. They have always just drained them in the office. He only gets them though like once a year so maybe that is why they have never mentioned this treatment.

3 yrs ago I went on roaccutane and was on for 6months and my skin cleared up completly! the only side effect was dry skin and I coped wit this by puttin loads of vasoline on whenever I was at home and going 2bed. I think Going on roaccutane was d best thing I hav ever done bt 3yrs on the spots are coming back and my skin is getting more oily again and I am back feeling down about it and am thinking about going bac on it if my doctor agrees!

My son 20 and he has had cystic acne for more than 6 years and now his Dermatogist wants him to try accutane and he is ready to use it because he is tried of dealing with it and he really wants a girlfriend. Trusting that his parents (us) will make the right decision. I’m just really affraid because he is in college and he is doing really well and we don’t want anything to disrupt his momentum.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Shirley

I’ve been on Accutane for 5 months already. and so far my acne has almost completely cleared up! Also 95% of the scarring has also disappeared and I have also been using “Neostrata Skin Lightener” to cover the few marks that are remaining. I am grateful to be acne free, however, the dry lips are unbearable and so are the mood swings! Being in my last and most crucial year in highschool, the feelings of depression and ennui which I trace to accutane haven’t been conducive to my studies. My advice to other people who are considering this drug is to invest in numerous bottle of lip balm, moisturizers and sunscreen.
