Roaccutane – Week 1

Not much has changed so far. I think there’s an improvement in the brightness of my skin. It seems a little more illuminated and feels smoother, but I’m still having breakouts. I also had a little dryness around my nose and mouth half way through the week, but nothing more since. The dryness may have stopped because I got my period (sorry - I debated whether I should mention this or not, and I decided that I should because other women might wonder if it affects their side-effects too). My lips are dry and my little tin of Vaseline is diminishing fast! I’ve had pains in my calves and hips, but I honestly think this is due to exercising, as I’m often a bit sore afterwards, especially with kickboxing.

I forgot to mention in my first entry what dose I’m on. I’m on 4×20mg per day and my dermatologist has said that I shouldn’t need to see him again unless there hasn’t been any change by the end of the course. I’m hoping that he thinks I’m a prime candidate for the high does to work straight away without any problems, and that he hasn’t chosen this course because he wants to keep the number of patients he has to see on a regular basis to a minimum.

I also forgot to mention where I get spots; my cheeks, chin, around my jaw line, shoulders, back and top of my arms. I rarely have spots on my forehead or neck.

I plan to take pictures every week so I can see if there is any improvement. But I’m afraid that I’m not brave enough to post them – I will do this once I see a significant improvement.

I wonder: are there are any women on here with relaxed hair? I’m a bit concerned about the possibilities of hair loss and scarring due to the relaxing process.

hey joyce, me again :)

the symptoms you described during your first week- the illumination, smoothness, dryness and still some breakouts- are exactly what my first week has been like too.

I also get spots in the same places you do, AND my hair IS relaxed!!

Are u my elder twin, or am I your younger clone? lol

Unfortunately, I wasn’t even aware of the possibility that the relaxing process might cause scarring or hair loss, that’s a very scary thought, as I would be due for about 3 relaxers over my alloted 6 month treatment :(

I’ll make a note to call my derma and see what experience any of his prior patients had with it…

When I find out I’ll reply here, please do the same if u find anything, k?

Hi Amaris,

Must admit, I’m a bit freaked out! Geez… coincidences, coincidences :o)

I don’t mean to scare you; it’s just that the leaflet says ‘no waxing’ cos it can irritate the skin and scar, and it also mentions hair loss as a possible side effect (or did I get that one from Wikipedia? Hmmmm). So I’m a bit concerned. My hair grows rrrrrreeeeaaallllyyyy sssslllloooowwwlllyy, so hair loss would really effect me :o( I must check the leaflet again, to be sure I’m not making stuff up :os

I forgot to mention itchiness as another side effect I’ve been having. Have u been itchy?

Hey Joyce :)

My derm says it’s ok for me to continue relaxing during the treatment. But my scalp has been itchy and a bit sore, so if that doesn’t settle down then I won’t for awhile. But my hair has been relaxed recently anyway so I won’t have to worry about it too soon…
