Roaccutane and dianette

After suffering from acne for the last 15 years, on and off, thanks to Roaccutane, I went to see a dermatologist last night and he has suggested that I have another course. This will be my third course in the last 9 years. For the previous two courses, they cleared my skin up beautifully and kept it clear for a couple of years. However the acne did come back, which has been quite distressing for me, especially after seeing how beautifully clear my skin had been after the treatment.

After discussing this all with the dermatologist last night, it has all become very clear as to why my acne came back both times. I had been on Dianette while taking the roaccutane, and then after about two years after stopping Roaccutane, on advice from my GP, I came off of Dianette for a break, as you are not supposed to be on it for long periods of time. As I was not in a relationship, my GP said there was no need for me to go onto another pill. Within a month or two of coming off of Dianette, the acne was back. I did not make the link either time, however what the dermatologist said last night made a lot of sense. Dianette helps to control your hormones and as my acne is very hormonal, by coming off of Dianette, my hormones could not cope and the acne came back.

The dermatologist has said that I should have been weaned off it gradually by going onto other pills that are not as strong; he suspects the acne would not have come back if this had happened. It is amazing to think that although I never thought Dianette was doing anything for my skin, it was controlling my hormones and therefore preventing the acne from coming back.

This time around though my situation has slightly changed, due to migraines that I get, I was taken off of Dianette four months ago, due to the risk of stroke, and put on Cerazette, another pill. I was told that they did not know how it would affect my skin, it could make it worse, and in which case I was to stop taking it. However it has made no difference to my skin thankfully.

I am not sure how being on cerazette will affect my hormones in relation to my skin after I have been on this next course of roaccutane, I guess time will tell.

I hope the above may help others out that are on Dianette. I would really recommend talking to your dermatologist about what to do with Dianette in the future. I stopped taking Dianette both times about 2 years after being on roaccutane and the results were terrible. I am also not a dermatologist, so would not want anyone to think that they may get the same results as me, hope my experience of what has happened does help in some way though.

Hi Natalie
Reading your story sounds all too familiar!!
I am 28 now but been on Dianette since i was 16. Last year came off for a short break and my skin flaired up so bad they put me on a 16 week course of roacutane.
Have just finished my course I am delighted with the results and also come off Dianette.
My derm hasnt explained if my acne is hormonal or not so not sure if it will return which is quite disheartening!!
he has just told me to face things when or if they happen!!
Am i right in thinking you skin stayed clear for 2 years after your course?
Also my brother took roacutane when he was younger and it worked for him…does that mean it will work for me??
I really hope your 3rd course helps - good luck

Hi Abbi,

You are right, after completing my 1st and 2nd courses of Roaccutane, my skin stayed clear for about 2 years, until both times I stopped Dianette.

I have been told my dermatologist can tell my acne is hormonal as I get flare ups around the sides of my face, nest to my ears, temples and down under my jaw line.

It is interesting that you say you stopped Dianette at the same time as roaccutane, has your skin stayed clear? I am wondering if I would be ok to stop taking the pill when I stop roaccutane and look at alternative forms of contraception etc.

Am on day 5 so far of this course and so far dryness has not been too bad at all, lots of lip balm and eye drops are being used though :-)

Have you been given Isotrex gel for your skin which is roaccutane in a gel. My dermatologist has told me to keep this and use it as soon as I start to get a flare up after the course has finished.

Thanks for the good wishes and same to you.

I have to say your derm sounds great…i havent even heard of that cream!! I will discuss at my next appointment with him.
I am sad to say from what you have written my acne seems to be hormonal as mostly round chin and jawline. I have already decided that if my spots come back i am not doing another course of Roacutane…for one thing i cant afford it!! I am going to look into other pills like Yasmin etc.
Skin is clear but only been off the Dianette and Roac for 1 week…i am keeping everything crossed for the next few years.
Dianette has kept my skin clear for so many years and stopped scarring, unfortunately I am not allowed to stay on it anymore due to high risks of blood clots.
Please keep me posted on how you get on, sounds like our stories are very similar.

M story is also v similar. After being on dianette on and off for 15 yrs- as well as every antibiotic and cream you can think of- my gp changed my pill because of the DVT risks and i had an almighty flare up, just like every other time i have a break from it. I was put on roac due to persistency of acne rather than severity and i was wondering if acne will be back when i come off dianette after roac course.

would love to hear from anyone who has managed to stay clear after stopping dianette.

Good luck to everyone.

Hi
I too have had problems with flare ups after taking stopping taking the pill after a roaccutane course.

I wasnt on dianette though i was on another pill that you can take for long periods of time. I found that it worked in the same way as dianette and was really good but i cant remember the name of it. I only stopped taking it because i started to get migranines which means i cant take the combined pill at all now :-(
