Posted in Roaccutane Diaries

I picked up my final/fourth month of roaccutane half an hour ago. I had a brief chat with the pharmacist about how I am still getting spots. She agreed that I should make an appointment with my derm, as the treatment can be continued up to 6 months. As I was already in the hospital, it made sense for me to go directly to the dermatology dept to make an appointment. At the derm desk, I explained that the derm told me to make an appointment if the treatment doesn’t work and that I was also concerned that my blood had never been tested for fat levels. The receptionist opened my record on the puter only to find that I had been discharged. DISCHARGED!?! I’ve only had 1 appointment and I haven’t finished the course; how can I have been discharged? She tried to tell me that I’d need to go back to my doctor to get another referral. Luckily the woman sat next to her said that she doesn’t think I should have been discharged, not just because I hadn’t completed the treatment, but also because I was told to come back if it hadn’t worked. They asked me who my derm was and I told them. Turns out he’s retired now. I wonder if someone just wanted to clean up his books, so rather than transfer me to another doctor they discharged me instead. To be honest, I wasn’t surprised to hear that he’d retired either – he didn’t seem… bothered, I guess. Like this was all too much of a trial to him and he was just killing time (“These bloomin’ patients, coming into my office needing treatment!”). Anyway, the receptionist called the derm secretary; she’s looking into it and will call me back. Fingers crossed they sort it out.

I have seen some improvement compared to before I started treatment. Today I do have less spots and my face is less oily. But I want to have the skin I had in weeks 3 and 4 – that was great! I’ve decided to be brave and show you all what I mean. I’ve uploaded a picture of me showing a snap from weeks 0, 4 and 12.

Thanx, Abi. I know it’s a lot better than pre-roacc. However I can feel some beauties under the surface - I’m hoping they stay there!

Thanx, Kelly. I would smile more, but it makes my lips crack - ha!
Just got a call from another derm; they are going to make me an appointment. No guarantee that it will be before this course ends as they have a back-log of follow-up appointments. He advised me to see my GP for a blood test for fats. I won’t be surprised if my GP says something like “Well, they can’t be necessary if your derm didn’t direct you to get one”.

Oh, I’m really feeling positive today :os

you are welcome hun

i had a two week gap between appointments last time so i went to see my gp and he gave me two weeks worth of roac to see me up to my appointment. i was automatically blood tested each two months to check my levels, most were clear although my colestoral did go up slightly but i am trying to suppliment that with the drinks etc, the flora range is great! i am suprised that they haven’t been testing your bloods already (first time i have heard that). its worth getting done for your own peace of mind! so glad you are feeling possitive i have felt that most of the way through untill recently but now i have got hold of my derm i have perked up lots!

keep smiling and hooray to clear skin (my god the things we do for beauty ay!!! lol)

Hey Joyce :)

Your skin may not be as good now as it was in week 4, but it’s definately better, so hopefully it’ll improve even more when you get your treatment extended. For me, weeks 3- 5/6 were the worst, but since then its been pretty great.

About the bloodtests tho, I haven’t been tested since the initial pre-treatment one- is this something I should be dreadfully concerned about? Can you tell me what is it that those tests are to check for, so I could question my derm about it?

Thnx :)

Joyce your skin looks fantastic !!

I have to have my blood test about a week before every appointment and I have an appointment every 6 weeks so that is quite unusual to hear you’ve never had one.

Anyway you look fab ! x

Re: tests - I’ve had one every month but they just check that I’m not pregnant. Are your blood fat levels tested every 6 weeks?

the blood tests thing is confusing as it depends on your age and stuff as well (i believe we oldies have a higher risk of nasty things happening to liver). i had my blood tested pre-treatment and don’t see my derm again until 8 weeks into treatment. however she’d said i should have a blood test along with my preg test last week. the hospital said i wasn’t booked, my derm was out that day, and tried to not to give me one. i settled down in waiting room until it was easier for them to do it. better safe than sorry.

joyce, if no appointment is forthcoming i’d explain the whole sorry story of how you’ve been bumped off the lists mid-treatment to your g.p. and insist you get bloods done there. oh, and i’d insist that they create hell with hospital about getting you another derm. if that fails start creating hell yourself! leaving someone without a derm when they’re on roac is beyond irresponsible.

but aside from all that, the improvement in your skin is great!

Thanx, Naboo. I’ve made a doctor’s appt for next week. I’ll ask to have a blood test to check my fat levels but I’m not sure about complaining to them as they probably won’t be any help. Earlier this year the surgery took me off their register for no good reason at all (an ‘internal cockup’). I seem to get all the luck :op

Amaris - I wrote a reply to your comment, but it appears to have gotten lost :os I think I wrote: Isotretinoin can increase your level of blood fats (triglycerides and cholesterol) which is not good for your heart. I don’t know how often people should be checked, but there’s no harm in discussing it with your derm.

Hi Joyce, sorry to hear about your bad luck with the derm. It sounds to me like this doctor wasn’t bothered about his patients anymore because he was leaving. It’s good news for everyone else who gets refered to that hospital that he’s not there anymore. Don’t let them fob you off, it’s obviously best for you to continue with this treatment for longer than to have to do it all again (like I had to!) They wont want to admit that a mistakes been made though. best of luck.

Why are this acne so mean. I have been suffering from acute acne for quite 2 years and nothing is working out. I have tried all sorts of cosmetics line but none is positive. I got an appointment with a derm. who gave me another sets of gel to try for 5 weeks, and this drug is damn expensive but i bought only to see that at the 3rd week notin +ve is seen. I have lost so much job because of my state. It irritates that I can´t even touch and feel my face. Is really depressing.
