Posted in Roaccutane Diaries

My name is Jane and I am writing this on behalf of my son. He doesn’t know I am writing this because I don’t want to scare him with the side affects and consequently put him off the drug. He is 16 and has been suffering since he was 13.We have been backwards and forwards to the doctors for the past 2 years. He has tried all the lotions and potions, prescribed and over the counter. Nothing has worked! We had a visit to the doctor in July and he did mentioned Roaccutane but, never explained really about the side affects and I just heard LIVER DAMAGE and said no way !

I looked it up on the internet and thought even more so NO WAY! Since then I found this web site. What a brilliant idea of having peoples diaries while using Roaccutane and has given us the confidence to try it.

So yet another trip to the doctors to discuss this drug. The visit was on the 24th of October and he is seeing a dermatologist on the 7th of November, thanks to my husband taking out Private Health Care with the firm he works for.

Other wise it would have been 3 months or more on the NHS.

Glad it has helped you ease your mind Jane…believe me, your son will thank you for it I can promise you that!!

And always remember - not everyone gets the same side effects (aside from the dry lips methinks - no one gets out of that!!!)
As I said before, I wish I had been taken seriously when I was your son’s age as it would have made a huge difference to me.

Also I have noticed there are no “before and after” photographs. I can’t put any on of my son as he does’nt know about me writing this. Are you not able too or not brave enough. I would totally understand if this is the case.

Hey Jane,

I do have my before and after pictures on my computer but I’m not sure about posting them. I have horrid images of people I went to high school with coming across this site somehow and finding it hilarious that even after high school I was still battling with acne (people at high school wern’t that nice to me).

On the other hand though, I really do want to post them as I think it’s really good for other people taking Roaccutane to see exactly the difference it has made for me.

I’m still undecided!

Hi Abi. You could edit your pictures ( if you have editing program on your computer) and just show before and after of part of your face or body. What do you think?

Hi Jane,
I think this site is a huge help for people considering or taking roaccutane as you can share your thoughts/experiences with people in the same situation. Which is great, especially when you feel like you are the only one with acne and all its problems! People on here actually relate to what you’re going through.

I know your son is young, but maybe this site maybe more beneficial to him as he will be the user and will be able to relate more to what people are experiencing.

I know the side effects are scary and as a parent this would be worrying for yourself as well. Your son will have to read the patient information booklet given by the dermatologist so he is aware of the risks and make that decision himself as he is 16 and sign his consent. This site with real experiences would be an enormous help to him.

It is lucky for you both that you are close (even during his puberty phase) that he will be able to detail to you what he is feeling to enable you to then write his diary of experiences (even though he doesn’t know).
Hope the appointment goes well.

hi,

the best thing i think you could do to help ensure your son will see this treatment through to the end is to print off other peoples diaries and let him read through them, this will help him understand that not only are the side effects bearable but also that they are worth it in the end
