Posted in Roaccutane Diaries

Hi All,

Well that’s it guys! Exactly 170 days and 458 pills later I have now completed my course of roaccutane. I’ve just taken the last pills!

The results: my skin is acne-free and has been for (at least) the last 6 weeks of the treatment. No spots…AT ALL! :)

My acne was never severe….I didn’t have large nodular, cystic acne all over my face. In fact spending half an hour with the concealer and foundation in the morning covered it up to the point where it might not even be noticed. But what I lacked in severity I made up in persistency. I had acne for 7 years from the age of 14. Also, I was constantly greasy and shiny and had to run to the loos to use oil-blotting sheets throughout the day – it was really embarrassing! So when I hit 21 earlier this year, tired from trying everything and carrying a shattered self-esteem, I decided to book an appointment with a dermatologist privately.

Broadly speaking, the first couple of months were spent waiting for something to happen, the next few months were spent trying to endure some pretty awful and intense side-effects and by the end I couldn’t wait for the treatment to finish! Especially with summer kicking in…the treatment’s definitely harder to endure in the heat.

You all know a fair bit about roaccutane so I won’t bore you with the obvious drying side-effects I experienced – dryness, nosebleeds, freakish-rash-on-hands etc. But to sum up the greatest annoyances for me personally were:

  1. Peeling lips – not so much dry lips because that was a constant battle but when the lip skin actually peeled off (at work!) and left the lips sore underneath.
  2. Being contact lens intolerant for the duration of the treatment and some eye infections.
  3. Constantly sweaty brow line and nose! Ewww! Strange I know…seems like a pretty rare side-effect but it was a nightmare for me.

I have scars/red marks and they’re quite noticeable so I’m not at a stage where I can go outside with no foundation on. This is a bit of a downer but knowing that, unlike the acne, the scars will fade in good time is reassuring enough for me.

The Roaccutane experience is truly life-changing. This website has definitely helped me throughout the treatment and thanks to all those who keep this community going. I love the fact that everyone on here knows and understands each other. We all go through roughly the same journey…apprehension about the side-effects, frustration at the progress and those damn breakouts. Throw in spending a load of hard-earned cash on moisturising products and you have the full Roaccutane Experience!

I also think you become wiser about the products advertised out there – you think to yourself ‘Damn, if this is what I have to go through to get rid of this acne then what was I doing buying Oxy Spot or something like that!’.

So to all those deliberating whether to go on roaccutane: Do It! You won’t regret it.

To all those currently on roaccutane: There’s no underestimating how difficult and demanding the treatment. It will (undoubtedly) leave you downright p*ssed off at times but fundamentally it comes down to one thing. The final results will be (and are) worth every single minute. So keep it up and all the best!

I hope my posting can give you some hope. I only took 1 sick day off work throughout the whole treatment so all-in-all it was tolerable even though it take its toll on your body. Now, I just hope the acne won’t return cos I’ve binned the oil-blotting sheets! :-s

Congratulations!! Lol your enthusiasm for having finished your course is definately contagious. After doing the maths I discovered your treatment course was the same length mine is supposed to be [24 weeks, right??] I’m in my 6th week now, and I’m looking forward to having a post on this site as exciting as yours in the next 18 weeks or so :-)

Hope you see continued improvements, good luck ^_^

Hey Amaris
Yep 24 weeks. I was on 40mg for the first 6 weeks and then increased to 60mg for the remainder of the course. I was lucky cos I didn’t have a major breakout period at all even when the dose was upped. 18 weeks and I should be reading a similar post from you :) Hang in there…

Thanks Abi! I keep worrying the acne will return now and from reading your diary you must know exactly how I feel! My fingers are crossed for your 3rd treatment. xxx

Paula,
I have to agree with you. People think roaccutane=no acne=clear skin=no need for major make up coverage. I have olive skin and the scarring that’s been left behind is quite prominent. When I started, I was under the impressive I would finish roaccutane not really need foundation by the end! Even though that hasn’t happened I’m thankful that the cause of the scars has gone and the ones remaining should fade.

I’m sorry to hear about the skin problems you’re facing. It could be because of the summer heat and sweating under a layer of makeup isn’t allowing your skin to breath. So you might not need a derm just yet…how about trying mineral makeup? It’s light, contains zinc-oxide which is really good for the skin, most (if not all) come with SPF protection and they’re obviously non-comedgenic which is the biggest bonus of them all!
Has your skin been getting quite oily again? That’s usually the first sign that sebum production is back on course and a few spots might just follow.

Hey Misha,

great post :) are things getting back to normal now body wise (ie dry lips etc) ?

Paula, try using a tinited moisturizer intstead of a foundation they can still have good coverage and they let your skin breath a bit more. i have heard that mineral make up can cause breakouts, i forgot where i read it but its stuck in my head!!

Hi Becky,
Fourth day off roaccutane and it still very much feels like I’m still on it! The dryness hasn’t subsided - both skin and lips. Still applying something on the lips every hour at least. Hope to keep you updated though…

I`ve finally agreed to let my 15 year old daughter try accutane after she has tried just about everything else ! The side effects are a worry but its really positive to hear most of you say that it truly has helped. She is a smart, kind and wonderful girl, and its been awful to see her self esteem disappear because of her skin problems. I hope she is lucky enough to have great results too.

Hi Kay,
I wish your daughter all the best in her treatment. I would see my mum at times while I was on it and she’d be quite concerned at the sight of my lips and want me to stop! As long as your daughter is supervised by a good derm, regular blood tests and a supportive mum like yourself she should be absolutely fine! Any questions, drop me a comment and I’ll try to help. :) Good Luck!

Hi all
I’ve had to have a few more than normal dermatology appts before getting my pills as I have some malformed pores on my face that need to be cautorised with a big laser (eeep very scary). But the tablets are the step after that. Seeing how positive everyone is about the outcomes and how supportive everyone is, makes me less scared about the surgical procedure and the tablets.
Thanks everyone!
Amy

paula, DO NOT go for mineral make-up! it contains bismuth oxychloride which is the number one cause for rashes and breakouts! it ruined my face… just go for oil free foundation or concealer in the areas you need covered and sweep over a bit of bronzer…
