Today is the 16th of October 2007 and I visited my Dermatologist at my local hospital after a long wait of 9 months.

I attended clinic today hoping that my specialist would prescribe me what I have been waiting for, Roaccutane!

The Dr prescribed me the drug at 3.30pm, had my blood test to see the function of my Liver 3.45pm and finally collected the drug at 4.00pm.

I have a problem now, I’m sitting at home with the pills in front of me deciding whether to take them or not, even after years of failed treatment. I have craved for this medication for months and months and have now come up against a brick wall due to the now apparent worry about the side effects. I have known how serious the side effects are for over 12 months much before having the drug prescribed but now I have the drug feel totally scared of taking them.

I’m going to sleep tonight and tomorrow will have hopefully overcome my stupidness!

Hi Stevo,

Hopefully by now you have decided to give the medication a go…

I’m on my second course, and for me the side effects have been totally manageable, and all subsided after stopping the treatment.

I guess the way you need to look at it is, all of the side effects are reversable, so it it gets too bad, you could just stop taking the treatment.

(The Depression side effects can be a worry for some, but as your consultant will probably have told you, the link isn’t a proven one, and who’s to say that people with Acne who have it so bad they need Roaccutane, aren’t already feeling a bit down!)

The other point is that if the medical world perceived the side effects of the treatment to outweigh the benefits, it would not be given to paitents.

Personally I feel better now I am on Roaccutane than I did before I started taking it and thats even with the side effects! 3 weeks into my treatment and I can see an improvement in my skin. I don’t have new spots every day, I don’t have to wash my hair every day (a bonus for a girl with long hair) I feel much happier about myself!!

Give it ago you won’t know unless you try!!

Hi Stevo

I can totally understand I had my tablets prescribed last week and only started taking them yesterday.

I just thought with all the other stuff I’ve taken and rubbed on my skin to try and shift them had similar side effects just not as loudly advertised, one set made me so ill I had to take other drugs to combat the side effects and they were the low dose antibiotics. So I thought what the hell may as well give them a go because I’m not happy with the huge sore lumps on my face or the scars and I don’t want any more of those.

Good luck with whatever you decide

Hi Stevo, I took my first tablets yesterday too (Fri 19th), so u’re not alone! It’s scary stuff, but I’m sure we’ll all be ok. Like you, I’d been looking at the tablets sat in my bedroom, wondering if I really should take them. But there’s no going back now! And if it does anything I don’t like, I’ll stop taking them. Hope everything goes well 4 u.
