Diet/vitamin supplements?

Hi everyone,

I want to take some kind of vitamin supplement and know that it must not contain vitamin A.  I sent a friend to the chemist today (in hermit mode due to massive breakout) and told her to tell the pharmacist that I am on Roaccutane and mustn’t take anything containing vitamin A.  She came back with a multivitamin which, although it doesn’t contain vitamin A, contains beta-carotene.  I presume therefore that I can’t take this?  You would have thought a pharmacist would know (!)…She also bought Brewer’s yeast.  Does anyone know if I can take this while on Roaccutane?  Has anyone tried it?

I’m not expecting any kind of supplement to improve my acne but just wanted to try and give my body/skin all the help possible in repairing itself.  Probably won’t help but might make me feel like I’m doing something positive to help myself!  Can anyone recommend a good supplement?

Also, in terms of diet, are we supposed to avoid foods high in vitamin A?  I’ve not been told to do this so am not cutting out my carrots yet ;)  Equally, are there any types of food that are particularly beneficial to help the skin repair itself?  Also noticed my hair felt dry when I washed it this morning.  I put on a load of conditioner and it seems OK but I’m sure it will get dryer when my dose is increased.  Any supplements/food that will help this out would be good too.   I’ll ask my derm at my next appointment but just wondered if anyone had any advice?

Thanks,

Laura

Hi,

Supplements i take are Zinc (15mg) 1 or 2 daily tis helps skin they say, a supplement called GMX which has Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM and Vitamin C (3 a day) these are primarily for joints, experienced no pain yet but ive heard some do so i take these as preventative maintenance, i also take Flaxseed Oil as this helps joints too, similar to Cod Liver Oil but without the vitamin A content. As for foods to avoid i’ve not been told to avoid anything and still eat as i was before, which is pretty healthy, if not even healthier than before i started Roaccutane. Also i’ve started drinking Green Tea as it aids your body in detoxifying and Vitamin A is classed as a toxin (i maybe think too much about all this stuff) but fingers crossed side effect at present are mnimal, still going to the gym 5 times a week and on my bike for 50-60mile bikes rides on the weekend with no stiffness in the joints, which was a main concern of mine before starting the course.

Cheese,

Dan.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the info. I will look into all that. Flaxseed oil sounds like a good one. I want to try to get into green tea but I don’t really like the taste (wanted to do this before going on Roaccutane) Actually, I did like one I tried but it was a really expensive one from a specialist shop. The others I’ve tried all had a bit of weird tang! Maybe it will grow on me!
Wow, you sound pretty fit. I’m definitely going to take some stuff for joints as I don’t want to have to stop going jogging. No problems on that front at the moment but might happen when my dose is increased.

Hi Laura, Tesco do a green tea with berries, it tastes good, just add a bit of honey. I know what you mean about some of it tasting rank. Theres loadsa different sorts at the supermarket now and apparently white tea is even better for you, contains less caffeine too so its ok to drink at night.

All the best anywho,

Dan.

Hi Sam,

Green Tea is fine to take, this is not at all going to stress the Liver at all. There’s a green tea you can can get from Sainsury’s that contins Milk Thislte and Dandelion etc (its aboout 2 quid) but is really good for you-never heard of green tea tablets, sorry. But they should be fine whilst on R+. But on another note, instead of taking green tea tabs, just have green tea. It dont taste shit if yiu have proper stuff……honest.

any questions on supplemsnts etc drop me an email at dan_spare@hotmail.com any Q’s at all and i’ll be happy to help.

Cheers,

Dan.
