Day 2 - 10mg a day?

Hi everyone,

I’m on day 2 of my first course of Roaccutane.  I weigh about 56kg and I’m only on 10mg a day for the first month.  I think my dermatologist is planning to increase gradually each month.  If it means less side effects, then this suits me, even though it means I will have a longer course.  Did anyone else start off at 10mg? Does easing into it lessen the side effects as your body is able to adapt gradually, or does it just put off the real misery until later?!

So far, the only thing I’ve noticed is that I’m feeling tired.  I had one beer tonight, and felt like I had 5!  But this could be entirely unrelated to the Roaccutane and just general tiredness.  I’m tending to attribute every twinge to R at the moment!  The fact that my eyes feel sore and that I have a headache is probably because I’m sat in front of a computer instead of in bed!

Grateful if anyone has any experiences of the benefits (or not) of starting on a lose dosage?

Hiya Laura,

When I had my first course of roaccutane i was started on 5mg a day. It was gradually increased to 10mg, then to 20mg and then eventually 40mg for the last few weeks. I think it was actually pretty good to start low as it meant my body could adjust to it and i dont remember the side effects being quite as bad as my second course where i started on a higher dose. I did get very frustrated during the first few months of my treatment as a lower dose means it doesn’t work as fast, however, it was worth it in the end!

Hi There,

Ive just started my first course of roaccutane and have been on it for a week now. My face seems to be very red and feels like its burning! My skin is peeling and my lips are chapped! My dermatologist has put me on 70mg per day! After reading lots of comments on this i keep seeing that everyone is on like 5mgs to 30mgsbut not noticed anyone on 70mgs. Seem to be thinking that this is to much???

Hi Kim,
I’m on 60mg a day and I was also a bit worried I was the only one on here taking this amount!!! Have been on roacc for nearly 3 weeks and yes the side affects have been quick coming and not very nice at all but i’m coping……….just!!!! I had a really bad outbrake of spots coming into week 2 but since then (touch wood!!!) I haven’t had anymore and they seem to be drying up really well now. I don’t know why I am on such a high dosage I just agreed with what the derm said, although he did say if my skin dried to much to drop it down to 40mg but so far my wonderful clinique cream seems to be sorting that out!!

I started on 70mg. 10mg sounds cautiously low. I am on my second treatment so the derm was reasonably sure I’d be able to cope with the high dose.

Thanks, its great to know then that im not the only one on such a high dosage. I have actually been ok and my spots have really dried up and already my skin looks a whole lot better apart from the peeling and the redness! Does everyone get the red skin? Im going to a aniversary party next week and that will be me going into week 3, do you think the peeling and redness will be away or does this last long? I also feel really tired at night and im not sure if it has anything to do with roaccutane but im dropping off as soon as i hit my pillow sometimes im not even making it to bed!

Hi Kim

I am into week 2, on 30mg a day, and I have suffered with the red skin too - it’s like i’ve been out in the sun too long! Lol! I have found a god send of a product though thanks to a tip from someone on here - Boots No 7 Colour Calming Make up Base, it really helps die down the redness and your make up will go on so much better too!

Hope this helps! xx
