Hi All

I just started treatment yesterday (20mg per day, as prescribed). I have dry eyes today, but more concerned about the headache and ‘anxiety’. I had this weird thing last night where it seemed like my peripheral vision was a bit altered and I was quite confused and jumpy. It seemed to pass in a couple of hours, but most unpleasant. Now I just feel moody - hmmmm.  I’m not sure this is a long-term option.

I hate taking pharmies as it is, so not sure if I am being over sensitive or not. I thought 20mg was a low dose, but after reading some of your blogs - I’m not so sure.

Does anyone know what a minimum dosage is? Checked out the official website, but apparently life is peachy there - typical. Surely it reaches a point where its not worth taking - but then what…

Hi Melodie, Blimey! If you feel this bad on day one you’re not going to get through it. Read all the side-effects of the medication. I’ve been on it twice and I’d be very surprised if a bit of anxiety is the worst you get.

Don’t just read peoples early posts, read on a few weeks and you’ll see people get used to the side-effects and start seeing the benefits. It’s not going to be easy, especially the first month or so. You’ll start wondering if you actually look worse at first (and you might) but, soon the spots start to go and you’ll have clearer skin. Eventually you’ll start wondering why on earth the doctors didn’t give you it first instead of giving you a load of medication which made no difference.

You should give it a chance before deciding to stop. Best of luck! Adele.

Hi Mel,

I am just 10 days into 20mg and I had a severe breakout, aches and pains, really bad nausea, and yesterday (day 9) was in uncontrollable tears for about 2 hours and am about to get my periods again (only finished last period 1 week and a half ago. Went to the GP straight away and he said to stay off roac for 3 days then start having 1 pill every 2 days because for me the dose was too high (the Derm should have put me on 10mg, it’s all trial and error). But if your symtoms are really concerning you, see your GP. This is the second time for me, I was on Roac 20 years ago when I was 20 and the side affects are much worse this time around, now I am an old duck!!! Adele is right by saying that if you can just hang in there long enough it will absolutely pay off. I also got the doctor to give me anti-nausea tablets to help with the nausea (I just was not coping with that). There are ways and means to help yourself get through it. Keep us posted on how you are going because this website is a great support. Go get em kid. Kath

Hi Mel,
You’re on quite a low dose at 20mg. The official line in the BNF is 1mg per every kg of your weight. I weigh 66kg, so am on 70mg a day. Some Derms will start you on low dose and slowly increase you dependent on progress and to allow time for your body to adapt (and tolerate) the drug.

I’m on day 14, and have experienced a particularly nasty flare up, but this is expected. Bottom line, expect a lot worse in the next 2-3 weeks. The consensus from posts on here seem to be that things get better after the first month onwards.

Good Luck! x
