The last three weeks have been rough but I’m pleased to say that, although I still have spots on my cheeks, chin and the odd one on my neck and forehead, my skin has improved.

I have a big whitehead on my chin which is a bit annoying but I won’t squeeze it. Even better news is that the hyper-pigmentation (darkness) on my face has subsided though I’m still darker than I was before.

I consulted another dermatologist who told me that hyper-pigmentation is one of Roaccutane’s side-effects and that my skin should return to its natural colour once I stop taking the medication (phew! What a relief!).

Another good thing is that my lips, though still dry, are not as dry as they used to be. All in all I look more like a normal person but I still get asked why I’ve broken out by people who haven’t seen me since I started taking Roaccutane but like someone said it’s a marathon not a sprint. Take care everyone.

Hi Chishimba,

I have just read your diaries and background with interest and decided I just had to write. I am black too and I completely understand the grey skin/red lip look. Its just not pretty. I just had to write to you to tell you my experiences. I too have had acne for as long as I can remember and it just progressively got worse the older I got. Am now 32 and after trying every drug possible my doctor refered me to a dermatologist who prescribed Roaccutane. That was Last year in December. My skin broke out so badly that I nearly had to give it up at one point but am so so glad I did’nt!!. Am now in my 16th Week of roaccutane and I sometimes have to pinch myself when I look at my skin. My skin has completely cleared, I mean it looks amazing is all I can say. The biggest change is my boost in confidence, am a much happier person and it shows!! The sky is the limit for me cause I feel I can do so much more now where as before my skin was holding me back. I urge you to stick at it. Unfortunately if your skin reacts like mine it will get worse before it begins to get better. Mine was at its worst between weeks 5 and 8. I must stress the rewards outway all the side effects and I hope you will be inspired to carry on. Wishing you the very best in your roaccutane journey. Just hang in there.

Take Care Doris

hi chishimba,

i am black, but am lite in complexion. i have noticed that my face has gone darker compared to the rest of my body, though my lips are actually a nice pink.

i started my meds a week ago. i have had a terrrible headaches from day one and my eyes have been affected, i have pain in my left eye , comung from my socket and am only on 20mg a day. i actually have had to stop. i will probably have to reduce to 10mg when the headaches have stopped.

my face has never really been bad, but my back is a mess, and that is why am on roaccutane.

how many mgs are u on, what have been your side effects.

hope to hear from u

Hi,

Doris it’s really comforting to hear from someone who’s been where i’ve been and stuck it out. As i say my skin is improving there’s a saying in one of the local languages where i come from “pang’ono pang’ono ndi mtholo” which literally means a little by little makes a bundle.

Mubanga i’m on 40 mg a day. My symptoms are basically breakouts, dry skin and dry lips and hyperpigmentation (darkness, which is also reducing). I haven’t had any headaches what does your derm say about them? I’ve have shared my experiences in the previous weeks in my diary entries.

Thanks to both of you for sharing

I am also a black young woman (25 years). I have had breakouts altho I am now in my 3rd week, and i have light headaches, nothing to be worried about. I can’t wait to get a better skin.

My friends are already noticing some changes. Keep me posted on any developments.

Hi again,

i did experience the breakouts and light headaches in the beginning but these have now gone. The only symptoms I have now, nearing the end are still dry lips, abit of back ache and dry eyes (this can be relieved with moisturising eye drops). The journey has been worth it though, my only regret is not taking roaccutane sooner.

Hope this helps.

Take care

hello

I am afraid I am going to break the chain here - but it is just to say that I have very fair skin so i obviously didn’t experience the hyper-pigmentation, instead my face is red. And I mean really red!! I look constantly sunburnt and nothing I do gets rid of it!! So just to say at least you don’t look like ‘a fiery sunset’ - an analogy my boyfrind made (: s
