jennie123: 5 Months After Finishing…

October 27th, 2009

Hey all,

I thought I’d post as I haven’t updated in a good while.

I finished my tablets at the end of May and within 2 weeks I had a few spots under the surface and my skin was slightly oily again. I put this down to my skin readjusting and though its never been as nice as it was when I was on roaccutane, the acne wasn’t an issue. I noticed the condition of my skin the most rather than the spots, which at one point would never have happened. It became more oily, which my derm said was a lovely glow, I wasn’t so sure! Also, the open pores I had around my nose came back, not as bad, but they still came back which I wasn’t happy about.

If I got a spot it would only last a day, so all in all things were good as it was 10 times better than having acne.

While on my course my acne only disappeared within the last month of my 6 month course. I started out on 30mg, then went up to 40mg and finished on 50mg. It was only when it increased to 50mg that I noticed a difference.

Now though I’m starting to worry, Every day I wake up and I have a new spot. Don’t get me wrong, its no where near as bad as it once was, but I don’t want it to come back and I’m beginning to think it will. All in all I would be happy to have a second course as I don’t think the first course took it away completely as it never went till about 3 weeks before the end of the treatment. I’m worried about going to a doctor too as they may look at my skin and just think its a few spots, whereas I know this is how it starts. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Also, I have recently moved to London and I don’t have a clue about where I would go for a good dermatologist? If my GP won’t do anything, I may have to go private and I don’t have a clue who is good etc!! Can anyone recommend anyone?

Thank you all for listening to me moan and I hope the treatment is going well,

xxx

    Hi Jennie
I really hope you don’t need it, but if you do I can recommend Dr Whittaker at the Wellington Hospital near St John’s Wood tube station. I couldn’t get an NHS appointment so went private. Am so pleased I did. Dr Whittaker was very sympathetic to the fact I was paying myself and he didn’t make me see him every month or have monthly blood tests. He charges £125 per consultation, then of course you have the cost of the drugs.
    Good luck,
    Lynda

Sorry, I should have explained that better – my blood tests were all normal after three months and that’s when he decided that I didn’t need them anymore. If there had been anything causing him concern I’m sure it would have been a different story.

    Hi Jennie,

I’m signed up at St George’s Hospital in Tooting. They’re quite good if you live down south of London. If you prefer private then Dr Emilia Duarte-Williamson is great. She’s based on Harley Street and charges £150 for first consultation and then £100 for subsequent visits. Let me know if you want her number and I’ll dig it out.

I have heard of others who say it wasn’t until the last month it really disappeared and i’m experiencing the same, I’m just over two weeks off my last pill and I’ve just had my first completely acne-free week. I obviously don’t know if mine will come back or not, perhaps it will…

Go to your local GP and explain you’ve already been on Roaccutane and push hard for being referred to a derm. Don’t let them fob you off with creams, antibiotics and other stuff. It may be that the derm gives you that, but at least the derm is specialised in skin conditions!

Hopefully you won’t need another course, but if you do, good luck and stay strong!

Thank you for replying to my diary entry!

Since I wrote it I went to see my new GP and she said my skin had to be severe before she would refer me to a dermatologist so it looks like I’ll have to go private again as by no means am I wanting to let it get that bad that I have to have scarring again. Its so disheartening as it is getting worse and you do feel that no one will listen. I just hope a private derm will do something as although its not as bad as it was I’m getting hard lumps under my skin and they do hurt as well as looking absolutely awful!!!

    Hope you are all ok,

    xxx
