Ok so I’m just finishing my 5th week of treatment - I said in my last post I hadn’t seen any improvement or change expect dryness and I was just upped to 50 mg rather than 25.Well my skin’s definitely getting MUCH dryer, it would respond fine to moisturising except I wear quite a lot of make-up to help boost my confidence which also unfortunately tends to dry it further and also means u can’t just slap on some more moisturiser through the day when you need it.

I’m getting some worse joint pains in my wrists when i rock climb and in my knees when I snowboard but it’s not too bad really.

Starting to see an improvement i think!!!!! I’m prone to blackheads on my nose and open pores on my cheeks, under my eyes. The blackheads have almost completely disappeared and I think the open pores are shrinking. Yay!
I think my skin might be starting to clear - in my last courses of roaccutane I never got the dreaded “break-out” and this time seems to be the same - got a few big spots on my chin but they’re the only large ones I have and they seem to be shrinking! Yay again!

My mood is great: I never was affected by mood swings in other courses of roaccutane and this time is the same. Infact it’s improved because even though my skin’s still bad just now, I feel like it doesn’t matter anymore because it’s improving and the end is in sight!!!

I know there’s a lot of trouble trying to find the right products but over my 3 experiences on roaccutane I’ve found the best moisturiser is E45, as it’s so thick.

For the dreaded dry lips I’ve read a fair few suggestions on here but haven’t seen anyone mention “epaderm” - it’s the one dermatologists will give you a sample of if you complain enough to them about not being able to deal with your dry lips!!

I *think* you can buy it in chemists - its sold in a big tub and is actually a bath emmolient for babies or something but it’s amazing and because of it I’ve gone through 3 roaccutane courses without dry/cracked lips. It’s highly recommended!

For dry/cracked skin elsewhere - elbows knees etc, body butter is great you can get it from the body shop or boots or anywhere like that. it does clog pores though so you might see a few blackheads appear whereyou put it on but probably nothing very noticable

In terms of make up I wear the maybelline mousse foundation because it gives thick/opaque coverage, but it doesn’t go very well with dry skin. Any suggestions???

Hi Alicia,

I am on week 5 of Roaccutane and have to say I am starting to feeling more optimistic. I haven’t had a severe breakout since week 2 and am starting to see improvements.

I’m also finding my hair to last much longer between washes which is unheard of for me!

With regards to make up I find a good moisturiser plus SPF works wonders. Leave it 10 minutes to absorb then use minimal foundation that’s not oil free. Creme de la Mer is honestly the best moisturiser for parched skin and really brightens the skin. I couldn’t consider it before as my skin was so oily but for dry skin it is absolutely amazing and I am convinced it is helping reduce the appearance of scarring on my cheeks (I have lots of pick axe style marks). As for foundation I find Prescriptives and Estee Lauder’s Individualist great. If possible use a tinted moisturiser. I feel that overloading acne-prone skin with foundation emphasises it and the dry skin just makes it go patchy. I think it’s better to cover with a good concealer - again I love Estee Lauder and Benefit Boing Concealer. Powder also is worth avoiding as it will just stick to dry patches and look cakey. I have stopped eye make up altogether as my eyes are just too dry. Mascara is a necessity although I avoid eye make-up remover like the plague as it stings like hell and opt for vaseline to remove it as it is far more gentle. Hope these tips help… I guess it’s all just trial and error.

My hands and arms are a mess. This is really driving me mad. I have a terrible rash with open sores and the only thing I can use is Aqueous cream - which even stings from time to time. Have you experienced this?

So far my joints are ok but I am running the marathon in April and my dermatologist has said he’s going to take me off the pills 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after as apparently there are risks involved with intense exercise… does anyone have any further information on this?

Thanks for the epaderm tip. Will invest ASAP.

Hiya Chiara, thanks for the make up tips, ill look into it!

I didn’t suffer the rash particularly, but my mum was on roaccutane a few years ago and she got it really badly so I asked her about it, and she says the cream “eurax” works well its an itch relief but I think it’s sensitive enough for babies so it shouldn’t sting. She also recommended E45 with itch relief. Not sure the cost of either of them but just try whichever’s cheaper I guess!

Good luck with it all, Alicia

Hi Alicia,

I’m on week 4 and like you I like my make up!

I’m using Clinique’s Moisture Surge Extra - thirsty skin relief which is for under or over your foundation and can be repeated as often as you need through the day.

I found that my foundation was drying and caking around the areas where the skin was driest but I’ve changed my foundation to Clinique repairwear which is really creamy and looks great with the moisture surge extra. It doesn’t look like an oil slick on your face I promise.

My hair was dry to start with - as curly hair normally is - so mine is really really dry and I’m washing and conditioning every day. I use a leave in conditioner as a styling thing so I suppose that will help. My problem is my scalp is red and tight. Derm had read about it but never seen it until he saw me yesterday! Have Betnovate lotion for that.

Good luck with your make up. I couldn’t step out of the house without mine on but hopefully I will at the end of the treatment.

All the best

Gillian

hi all

i have to say i thought it was just me having a reaction to the increase in my tabs that caused the scabby rash on my forearms and back of my hands but i can see now it is a side effect, the rash goes scabby and then some open into sores which just get bigger and take weeks to heal, it is very uncomfortable at times and clothes rub then so i put plasters on them (i dont care what i look like now if i am gonna get good skin at the end!) i also have been getting a very red face, has anyone else had this? it looks like i have been running around for a bit, and it feels really hot.

i also have to say i could never manage to go past 2 days without a struggle with my hair between washes but now i have left it for 3-4 days and it is still ok (i have showered in the meantimein these 4 days in case you were wondering! ha) but have now found that it is breaking off everywhere about an inch from my scalp and is getting thin, i use head and shoulders shampoo and conditioner which is great for keeping your scalp moisturised and i spray a leave in protecter in as well before i dry it, i dont use straightners so it is just another side effect i think.

as for moisturiser, i have been using simple 12 hr moisture cream for my face and neck and the derm gave me dermol cream, but i find baby oil in the bath water much better for the body!

on to painful joints, i cannot walk down the stairs most mornings now because of pain in my knees and i have had very bad pain in my neck and lower back, my derm says it normally affects weaker areas but to take pain killers if it gets really bad, and it will go as soon as my course finishes.

there are so may side effects to these things but i am persevering as i want good skin at the end.

Hello!
All this talk of dry scalp has made me wonder about colouring my hair. I lighten my hair to light blond with nice and easy home colour stuff. I did 3 weeks ago it just before starting the ro-acc and checked with my derm as to whether it was still ok to dye hair whilst on the treatment. He said it would be fine. I’ve got a bout 2 weeks before my roots will come through and can really feel my skin and scalp drying out and am getting paranoic its going to burn like hell. Has anyone else continued to dye hair on the treatment?
