After a breakout, try not to fall into the trap of assuming there must be a cause and direct effect of acne.

Wash your face! Hygiene causes acne

Excessive washing and facial scrubs irritates your skin, which can aggravate acne.

Masturbation causes acne

An old wives’ tales started in the [19th] century by parents to stop their children from masturbating. This myth probably originated because young adults with acne, go through puberty, roughly at the same time.

Masturbation is safe and healthy. Many see masturbation as the ultimate “safe sex” - no risk of pregnancy or infection.

We should also mention masturbation does not cure acne.

Eating chocolate causes acne

If you do a little research on Google, cleverer people than me will tell you the basic fact, there is nothing in chocolate that has any direct effect on acne.

According to the book Skin Deep, Drs Turkington and Dover wrote, “In one study, 65 people ate chocolate bars every day for a month, but although the bars contained 10 times the normal amount of chocolate, the subjects experienced no worsening of blemishes”.

If you still unsure just ask Cadburys.

Acne is contagious

Acne is not contagious. Do all your friends and family have acne? I suspect the answer is no.

It is true that many skin diseases are highly contagious, acne is no one of them.
