A dry nose, resulting in nose bleeds is one unfortunate side effect people can experience whilst taking the drug Accutane.
In extreme cases, nose bleeds can continue after you’ve finished your Accutane treatment but usually they will only be temporary.
I experienced occasional nose bleeds whilst on Accutane (about 2 to 4 over 6 months). I have always been prone to nose bleeds so it is debatable whether Accutane caused them.
Heated indoor air irritates and dries you nose out so if you take Accutane in winter I recommend using a humidifier at night – this should minimize the risk of getting nose bleeds.
Simple tips:
- Apply pressure to your nostrils and hold your nose back for at least two minutes
- Stock up on cotton wool (Not for ideal fashion accessory so probably one for the home) – carry tissues when you go out.
- Eat Iron enriched foods – can help prevent nose bleeds.
- Avoid taking aspirin - aspirin can cause nose bleeds.
- Try not to blow your nose too hard.
- Line your nasal cavity with Vaseline (petroleum jelly), nasal spray or something similar.
If you get persistent nose bleeds, ask your dermatologist if you can drop down a dosage.
