Posted in Abi's Roaccutane Diary

Hello Friends!

Well things are going quite superbly at the mo. I havn’t had any spots for a whole week so I’m very happy about that. Also, i sort of expected to have very very dry lips and face now my dose has been increased but they are actually fine. My arms are still peeling off but I’m not really too fussed, I can always wear long sleeves lol.

I had a derm appointment today. My derm said my skin is looking good and that I only need one more month on 50mg to reach my cumulative dose. He wrote me a nice little action plan which I will share with you:

  • Complete last month of Roaccutane
  • Pregnancy test at the end of next cycle and 5 weeks later
  • Continue Dianette for at least 6 months
  • Use Differin gel for mild relapse

I asked him what his opinion is on chemical peels as it is something I have considered post-roacc, however he said he didn’t think it was a very good idea. I asked him to have a look at my face and tell me what his opinion is on my scarring and he sed I don’t have any “scars” as such, but I do have some inflammation on my cheeks from previous spots and some un-smooth areas on my forehead from previous comedones (or something like that). He said with all these things the best healer is time…so I guess i shall just have to wait!

I bought Gillian McKeith’s “You are what you eat” book last week and decided I was going to try and follow some of her tips in the hope it would be beneficial to my skin. I only managed one day of eating pumpkin seeds, walnuts and grapes and then gave up. Her suggestion for an afternoon snack is to eat an entire cucumber or two?! So anyway, I am now back to eating crisps and malteasers.

I have included a picture I took of my skin about 2 weeks ago, my skin hasn’t really changed at all since then. In the picture I am wearing some foundation to even out the redness on my cheeks/forehead.

Thank you Andy :-D

Yeah, i think once your skin is clear of spots you suddenly really start to worry more about the overall condition of your skin. I have some quite blotchy areas that I even out with foundation, but i’d much prefer it if I didn’t have to wear any make up at all!

Hello Aminah,

Yes it is unfortunetly, after my other 2 courses I relapsed so I have therefore had a third course. Hoping this is the 1 that does the job! Also, i’m not sure my dermatologist would give me Roaccutane again so it better be! Are you considering taking Roaccutane or have you already taken it?

Hello Jay!

Thanks for your comment :-)

Yeah, i definetly don’t fancy having to endure any more courses after this! I saw my dermatologist on Monday and I was telling him how i’ve finished uni but i havn’t managed to get a job yet and he said “if you persevere about getting a job the same way you have about getting rid of your acne i’m sure you will get one soon!”. Lol.

Yeah, nobody believes i’m 21! I went to an open day for some jobs in town with my mum and they handed my mum all the application forms cos they assumed it was her looking for a job cos they said I looked too young to be employed lol!! I have a job interview on tuesday and I’m so nervous cos theres gonna be 5 people interviewing me, it’s gonna be so intimidating! I get scared just having 1 person interview me, let alone 5!!

I studied health and community studies at uni, and I did my dissertation about Roaccutane lol. It was great cos I was actually writing about something I was interested in whereas all my mates were finding there’s really dull and tedious to do cos they didn’t have a genuine interest in the subjects they had chosen. R u at uni at the moment?

Hi again Aminah,

When my skin has relapsed it has never been as bad as my skin was before I ever took Roaccutane. From the age of 12-17 my acne covered my face, back and chest. Since I took Roaccutane when I was 18 i’v never had a single spot on my back again. When I have relapsed on my face it has only really affected my chin and cheeks, nowhere near as severe as previously.

What other sort of treatments have you tried already?

Hey Abi,
Big congrats on the job front - I’m sure you were oozing confidence with your beautiful skin - it looks amazing!
I so hope it starys that way for you. Listen just wanted to ask your advice on couple of things, I’m coming to the end of my second course - well 5 weeks to go, anyway I’m absolutely stressing already about the potential relapse when finishing!! I think you are so lucky if you only need to take this drug once!!! Is there any products you used or have been advised to use/not use on completion of your treatment to prevent a relapse? I know you haven’t got much longer to go on your 3rd course - what skin care routine will you use when you finish?

Also, did your skin go back to pre-roac levels of greasyness post treatment? After my first course I remained on dianette so didn’t have any excess oil problems!

Sorry for this bombardment of questions but its good to get advice from someone whos been there!!

Congrats on your job again honey!

Hello Katie!

Thanks for you comments :-)

My derm said that if I get a few spots after this course then I should go to the doctors and ask for “differin” gel because it is sort of like roaccutane but in a topical form. He also recommended i continue taking diantte for as long as possible as that will help prevent breakouts. He said that after taking roaccutane your sebaceous glands remain small, therefore topical treatments should be more effective than they were pre-roaccutane.

After finishing all my courses my skin never went back to how greasy it was before I ever took it. I actually still had dry skin on my cheeks and forehead several months after stopping roacc. Unfortunely my hair went back to normal tho :-( I love not having to wash my hair everyday whilst on roacc!

After this course I intend to carry on using my simple face wash and boots expert sensitive moisture cream cos iv found this leaves my skin really smooth ready to apply make-up. However, if i start to break out I will switch to an oil-free moisturiser and will apply Differin to any spots.

And i know what you mean, I’m so jealous of people who takle 1 course of roaccutane and are cured forever!!!!! Lets hope the courses we have just taken do the trick for us :-)

Thanks so much Abi, thats all really helpful info and great to know that topical treatments may work better now we have shrunken glands!!! Do you use an oil free foundation? I’ve just started using clinique superfit foundation and its quite good - anyway chick, hope new job goes well for you.

I’m currently using loreal true match super blendable foundation. It’s such a pain wen my skin is having a really dry day tho as it’s very difficult to apply foundation over a load of flaky skin! I have to use quite alot of moisturiser just to get my skin feeling smooth enough to apply make-up on to it. I have tried some other foundations that are oil-free but I normally go back to my loreal one as i have found it to be the best colour match for me.

im a bit hesitant to get on accutane.i have schedhuled an apointment to a derm 2-3 months from now to consider it.im currently just washing my face 3 times a day once in the morning with just water to wash the a bit of the oil, and when i get home from work i take a shower and use soap , and then just before bed i wash with just water again.ive also just started to take zinc chelate , ive been taking 2-3 for the pass 2 weeks , i plan on taking 2-3 for the first month and then dropping to 1-2 a day and then 3rd month 1 a day.so far my skin has been clearing up decently scars are fading a bit.if by the time my derm apointment happens and i end up with a break out i will talk to the derm about accutane.ive heard the reason most get relapses are due to what the drug does to your liver.the stories on accutane seem reasonable too about it.that the drug basically purposely damages your liver so that it wont produce the sweat /oil .while taking the drug you purposely damage it so it cant do anything , and once your off the drug hopefully your liver doesnt reheal itself otherwise it will be flooded with a bunch of hormones that will cause the acne.thats what ive read so far based on my research on what accutane does.if my derm says that is what it does i probably wont go on it due to the fact it will probably come back with vengence if my liver reheals itself , if it stays damaged and is unable to heal that would be good i guess for staying clean and clear.im a bit skepticle but ill just have to wait for my derm apointment.

Hi there, big thanks to everybody on here sharing their experiences.
I’ve been on roaccutane for 4 weeks. My head and skin are really itchy, my skin is really flaky and my lips are so dry it’s ridiculous! But…..i have hardly any spots, YAY!!!
Can anyone suggest a good lipbalm? I’ve been using Vaseline LITERALLY every few minutes during the day and have been putting Scholl cracked heel cream on my lips at night time as i’ve found it stops my lips cracking/bleeding when i first move my mouth in the morning.

#26 stu-pants1985 says...

Peter, I don’t think you’re qualified to make such rash statements about roaccutane. The fact you refer to sweat shows your reading on the subject is not up to scratch. The drug affects oil production within the sebaceous glands. The sweat glands are unrelated. The drug puts a strain on the liver. However, acne is not related to liver condition.

It’s a miracle drug for so many people and too write things like that serves to damn the whole process and will have an effect on all the tane users who frequently use this site.

Next time, please think before you post such negative thoughts.

September 17th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

#27 Peter says...

youre right im not qualified to say such , but if you knew anything about hormones and the root cause of acne you would know unbalanced hormones causes acne.no where in my paragraph did i say i was qualified.which is why i clearly state when i see my derm im going to definitely talk about the situation.the liver basically keeps the hormones in tact .which is why girls when there about to get their red some tend to get breakouts.Gee i wonder if that has anything to do with hormones.yeah.if you really think nothing at all in what i said can possibly be a case , ask yourself why accutane can only be given for 6-8months max ,yes its hard on the liver , but look into exactly what it is doing .you basically damage it purposely to stop it from functioning properly.which is why in short for the time it takes for it to recover you probably wont get further acne.

September 17th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

#28 gem says...

Peter,
Some of your facts are way off:
1. ‘unbalanced hormones causes acne’ - Hormonal activity can affect acne, but they’re not really the root cause.
2. ‘the liver basically keeps the hormones intact’ - not at all true.
3. ‘you basically damage [the liver] purposely to stop it from functioning properly’ - doctors will monitor your liver to make sure it does NOT become damaged. Roaccutane’s action is aimed at the skin, not the liver.

It sounds like someone has explained things to you in a very unclear way. I would recommend looking up ‘acne’, ‘roaccutane’ and ‘liver’ on Wikipedia.

September 18th, 2008 at 12:49 am

#29 jill says...

Peter,

The liver helps in metabolism and detoxification, nothing to do with hormone secretion.

It is the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary in the brain that control and secrete hormones!

You couldn’t be more wrong!

The reason the liver may get damaged is because it needs to break down the Roac, it is not damaged on purpose! If it is damaged, the doctor takes you off roac - that’s why they do blood tests!

#31 Andy says...

Hey Peter,

Before using Roacc, I thoroughly researched the drug and its believed mechanisms. My degree enables me to access and understand the medical literature. As others have already pointed out, I believe your ideas about the causes of acne are quite mis-guided!

The risk to the liver is caused by simple over-working of it. To breakdown the Roacc, the drug must go through chemical changes brought about by the liver. Thus, the liver is under greater pressure. Slight damage may be caused to the liver which causes it to leak its enzymes into the blood. The rise in liver enzymes sometimes found with blood results of Roacc patients is due to this. However, this is very minor and considered a risk not great enough to outweigh the drug’s benefits.

The hormonal influences of acne maybe triggered by enzymes released by the liver which go on to stimulate the hypothalamus in the brain.

How the drug works? - The Roacc (a steroid) interferes with processes of the cell which makes the biological components (amino acids) which control sebaceous gland function. By blocking this action, it literally turns off the tap; decreases/stops oil secretion. This is the believed to be the mechanism of Roacc. In no way does any of the medical literature suggest its primary mechanism is related to liver function.

I hope this helps (along with the other posts) clear up any confusion and possible anxiety caused by people reading this who are deciding to take Roacc.

Have you or anyone else reading this got slightly raised and shiny, orangey pink coloured patches on the skin that you can sort of peel the top layer off of? They’re only small(the size of a little mole) but i’ve got them on my arms and legs and was wondering how to get rid of them before i turn into somebody that can be employed for the next Tango ad campaign, lol.

Hello again Aminah,

Yes, i tried loads of different tablets/creams and nothing has ever shifted my acne except roaccutane. On this course I was put on 40mg but at the moment I am only taking 20mg a day as I was getting some quite bad muscle aches so i thought that reducing the does may help with that. It actually doesn’t matter how many mg you take a day, it is how many you have taken overall, therefore if I continue to take 20mg a day I will end up taking it for twice as long as if I was taking the 40mg.

Good luck!
