Yeah I thought so too. I was really exited about going, but after hearing all that I felt very deflated. I'm definately not going to do it.
I went back to my doctor last week, and I now have an appointment to see the dermatologist. Its not until May 27th, so I've got a while to wait, but I'm okay with that. I'm just a bit sad that I'm probably going to be on Roaccutane all summer, as I didn't get on too well with the sun last time I was on it =/

Hiya Shona,

Very very wise decision to avoid the n-lite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They also tried to sell me loads of very expensive products. I think the private clinics prey on people who are desperate for help and are willing to spend any amount of money. It's bloody scandalous!!!!

Heya everyone.
I went through exactly the same thing as Abi, starting with the acne at about 11. When I was 15 I went to my doctor and we spent a year trying antibiotics which didn't help at all. I also used a gel called Duac gel which didn't work either. So I was referred to a dermatologist at the hospital and I had a 5 month course of Roaccutane. I can't remember the dosage because it was over 3 years ago. I worked brilliantly and I was so happy. I did get really dry lips and skin but as long as i moisturised daily and kept vaseline/carmex on hand at all times I was okay. I did get a bit moody and my skin is still more sensitive to sunlight.
After about 6 months I started getting spots again, and they have gradually gotten worse. Around a year ago I went back to my doctor and I have been on antibiotics for another year, and my skin has only gotten worse.
I read about the n-lite laser treatment and saw the same interview on GMTV with the girl who it helped, so I went to The Private Clinic in Birmingham for a consultation two days ago. I was really exited. However after hearing that after spending £700 on three treatments (which I was willing to do with the money I've saved from my weekend job) I would probably need to go back every three months for top up treatments at £250 each, my exitement went away. I was told that 'we don't sell it as a cure, just a way of keeping acne under control'. I was also excouraged to but a set of cream which cost £40 and a foundation which helps the skin 'breathe', which costs £49.50. I think they just want to make as much money out of you as possible.
I am going to back to the doctors hopefully tomorrow to try and persuade him to refer me back to the hospital for Roaccutane. I am so unhappy and I have virtually no self-confidence. I'm willing to try anything!!

Hi Abi,
I started on roaccutane about 3 weeks ago on 40mg and im feeling the side effects! My skin was basically clear when starting on the drug but I knew how bad it would get during the summer. I have heard only bad comments on here about the drug and was wondering if it really does work, and will totally stop my acne? x

I'm 30 and have been off and on antibiotics for 3 and half years, tetracyline, lymacycline differin gel, acnisal, to name a few, my skin stay clear for a couple of months then after 4/6months from coming of antibiotics the lumps and spots re-appear, I visited a dermatologist and they aid I should try Roaccutane but after reading about the side effects and discussing with my partner I decided to just go on antibiotics again, I'm fed up of having to be permenatly relying on tablets, its a life of hell, I want something that will work, not just whilst i'm on it or for the two months after coming off whilst it is still in my system, It does get you down, I have a baby girl and have no pictures of her and I because of the unsightly look of my skin, I am going to speak to my doctor to be reffered again but wanted to know, Do the spots re-appear after being off the Roaccutane after 6 months, will it be a long cycle of being on it and off it like the antibiotics??? Please let me know your stories of when your off the tablets and if you have had to go back on them Thanks x x

Hi tiffany,

You are completely right, going to your GP and then asking for a referal to a dermatologist is the best route. Be prepared for possibly painful and "unsightly" side effects, however as you can see lots of people have had positive results after around 6months. I'm starting my 5th month now, and it has been up and down, but worth it i think.
Good luck! If you are on private health care your parents should have cover to pay for the trip to the dermatologist and the drug, if not you may have a longer wait for a non private dermatologist and pay for the drug. Seeing as you feel so down and it sounjds like more developped acne, I'm sure your parents will help you :)

Hey all,
So it's been a few weeks, since I last posted I've had my bloods done and returned, and have started my Roaccutane course. I've been started on 40mg a day (I weigh 100kgs, I guess 50mg might have been a bit too much to start with - going off the 0.5mg/1kg estimate). I'm a week into it, so far my lips have become rather dry, so am using a vaseline-type jelly the derm gave me. My face hasn't changed much - a little less greasy, a couple of small whiteheads but was expecting an initial outbreak after reading other people's experiences. Noticed today though, after having my shower the skin on my face is becoming drier - some came off while drying my face, again another sign that its working, but will have to wait to see results!
